What is Your Gift and How Will You Use it?

We have been working with students on how they see themselves, with some startling results. When asked what their greatest skills or talents are they came up with very little as individuals. When we asked those around them the list was endless, sometimes we forget and only focus on the things we can’t do! When the individuals heard how their peers see them their body language changed and they made a positive shift.

We all have a skill, a gift, something that comes from deep inside us and is part of who we are. This could be our own personal GPS, when you harness your power to your passion you can do anything.

So if you really dont know what your gifts are or feel lost, ask your friends and see yourself how others see you. Be prepared to be surprised by what you hear.

We then showed this video, it is 29 minutes long for those that may want to make a cup of coffee before pushing play!

We gave everyone a copy of the Martin Luther King passage to take away and hope that it will resonate with each and everyone of them.

“Not everybody can be famous. But everybody can be great, because greatness is determined by service.

You don’t have to have a college degree to serve. You don’t have to make your subject and verb agree to serve.

You don’t have to know about Plato or Aristotle to serve. You don’t have to know Einstein’s theory of relativity to serve.

You don’t have to know the second theory of thermodynamics in physics to serve.

You only need a heart full of grace and a soul generated by love.”

Nothing more to be said!

GCSE Keys to Success – Strategy

Strategy

A year 11 student suggested this video…. Enjoy!

The definition of Strategy;

The art or science of the planning and conduct of a war;
Long-term plan for success, a plan or stratagem.

Another key to coping with GCSE exams is having a success strategy or a plan that helps you focus your mind. Where, when and how you revise will get you the positive results you deserve. Here are some nuggets of knowledge to help you on your way.

Space
Creating the right environment that will halt distractions and improve your concentration is important. Colour has a profound affect on our mood if there is a room in your house that lifts your mood, hopefully your bedroom; make it your study hub. This space must be comfortable and have no interruptions from others.

There should be no noise, although some students like to have music playing which also raises their mood.

Time
We all have a time of day that we function at our best, when concentration and energy is at its peak. Revise during these times, have a pint of water on your desk as this keeps the brain hydrated and fruit readily available.

Goals
Setting realistic bite size goals, for that study session and what you want to achieve by the end of that day. If you look to far ahead you become overwhelmed and distracted.

Focus
Focus only on the work in front of you; depending on your learning style, revise in the way the information goes in best for you.

There is a simple questionnaire that will show you which is your preferred way of learning, use this link…

PMA
Positive Mental Attitude will help you shift your thinking. How we talk to ourselves affects how we behave and perform.

PMA phrases could be, ‘I will do my best today’ , ‘I am going to finish all of chapter…..’ , ‘ I can do French when I focus.’

Move It
Concentration starts to fade if you don’t take regular breaks and move about. Get up stretch, skip, dance, run on the spot for 2mins, use mouldable doh to relieve the tension in your hands. All this activity gets the blood pumping around your body and fresh oxygen to the brain!

All Change
Changing subjects helps fire up different parts of the brain and you will absorb more information. One to two hours is the maximum amount of time to spend per subject.

Rewards
Giving yourself an incentive to finish your work to the best of your ability means you will stick to it. Book the cinema, meet friends, go for a run or to the gym feel proud that your success strategy has paid off!

Good Luck remember you can only do your best.

Mums Rock!

I have had the pleasure of working with year 11 and 6th form students discussing what is SUCCESS.
I played them this very short TED talk presented by Richard St John.

You will see it is simple when you know how!
I think Frank Gehrys’ mum must be very proud and glad she pushed….

Success

We all can benefit from these very simple rules as they say you are never too old to learn.

Vodka is Healthy!

Who do you trust to give you information?

Newspapers, TV, FaceBook, Twitter, word of mouth?

How do you sieve through all the data we are bombarded with on a daily basis.

How do you know what to believe, what is fact or fiction?

Do statistics make an impression on you or improve the validity of what is being said?

This video was shown to year 10 and 11, apologis for the one use of bad language.

Watch this and then see if you change your mind about statistics….98% of all statistics are made up. ~Author Unknown

Embracing and Making Changes

Autumn is upon us and with it comes the change of one season into another. As adults we understand that change is inevitable, however for children it can be a little more challenging.

I wanted to write about something that has come up in some of my sessions when working with children. During a session together we will be talking about how they can change a situation and listing several options of what they could do to have a positive outcome.

When it comes to then prioritizing or choosing which solution they are going to implement they cannot choose. Sometimes it is because they like all the ideas, sometimes it is because they are not used to making decision but sometimes it is because they like the solutions but are too scared to make the change.

Why is this? Well, some children prefer to keep life as it has always been even if it is not the way they like it. They do not want to put the effort in or they do not know what the outcome is going to be. Why try something that may not work? Well, they will not know unless they have tried.

If you have a child who is like this help them see that not all change is bad and scary. Change can be good and can have a huge impact in the way they think, their beliefs and how they live their life. And how people respond to them too.

There will always be some changes that they cannot do anything about like how another person acts or what they say. They can try and change it but it may not make a difference. They won’t be able to do anything about their parents splitting up or moving from primary to secondary school either. If you find your child is going to be affected by change or has to make some changes in their life prepare them by talking about it, answering their questions and discussing their worries. Children generally like to know what is coming next so that they can start working out in their minds what is going to happen and when.

This Little Piggy…

I ran through the fallen leaves this morning kicking them into the air and feeling completely free and about 6 years old.
It made me think…

The term has started for most, the weather has changed and conkers are on the trees, ready to drop.
Mums are starting to get some semblance of order back at home after the long summer holiday.

Children are coming home ‘starving’ and like a swarm of locus devour the contents of the biscuit tin in seconds asking that question we all long for,’ How was your day mum?’ Sorry that is in a parallel universe….
That question….’when’s tea?’ as they disappear toward the TV and the XBox or is this just in my house?

I was sent this by a friend of mine and thought that it would add a smile, enjoy!
This is a true story, proving how fascinating the mind of a six year old is.
They think so logically.

A teacher was reading the story of the Three Little Pigs to her class.
She came to the part of the story where first pig was trying to gather the building materials for his home.
She read. ‘And so the pig went up to the man with the wheelbarrow full of straw and said: ‘Pardon me sir, but may I have some of that straw to build my house?’

The teacher paused then asked the class: ‘And what do you think the man said?’

One little boy raised his hand and said very matter-of-factly…
‘I think the man would have said – ‘Well, I’ll be f***** a talking pig!’

The teacher had to leave the room.

Bacon sandwich and a cuppa anyone?

A Different Perspective!

I am a teacher and a mum and I love both. I always say I have the best job in the world.
It is a privilege to see children grow and learn.

They are so different to what you see as a parent at home.
Some children are confident at home, but quiet at school, they do not like pushing themselves forward.
There was a recent programme on the television where pupils were recorded during their normal working day.
Parents were shown this footage and they were amazed at how differently their children are at school with their peers.
This is such a common occurrence and I see it all the time!

Some parents are very realistic as to their children’s misgivings, others less so!
I find that my privileged position allows me to take a different perspective when my child comes home and says ‘x did this to me today’.
My response? Oh dear, now tell me what happened and I am sure that there is another side to this story.
Believe me, you never take what they say to be gospel, by the time they get home, the story will have changed considerably!

We frequently have parents blazing into school unhappy with an incident the previous day; they then eat a little humble pie as the ‘true’ facts emerge!
Moral, never believe everything your children tell you and trust the judgment of your child’s teachers.

This is a hard lesson to learn, teachers do know what is best for your children and they know them all well.
